TFX Overall Score

The TradeFX score is calculated using our independent methodology, based on multiple broker criteria including regulation, fees, platform features, and trader experience.

We review and update our data regularly to keep comparisons current.

HFM, known as HotForex until 2022, scores well on TradeFX for cost-conscious South African traders. The Zero account quotes EUR/USD from 0.0 pips plus $3 per side, the Cent, Zero and Premium accounts have no minimum deposit, and the full MetaTrader 4 and 5 stack sits alongside HFM’s own WebTrader and app.

The score is held back by entity structure. HF Markets SA (PTY) Ltd is FSCA-authorised (FSP 46632) and based in Cape Town, but the client agreement and execution policy on HFM’s South African site are issued by HF Markets (SV) Ltd, an offshore company that acts as principal to your trades. Leverage up to 1:2000, and unlimited on InfinityX, also needs careful handling.

SA Focused

HFM has a long South African track record. HF Markets SA (PTY) Ltd was registered in 2015, holds FSCA authorisation as FSP 46632 and lists its office at Granger Bay Court in the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. HFM also publishes a USD/ZAR spread on every account, from 40.0 pips on Zero.

The point to check before funding is the contract. Every legal document on HFM’s South African documents page, from the client agreement to the bonus terms, names HF Markets (SV) Ltd, a St Vincent and the Grenadines company, as the party you trade with. St Vincent does not licence forex or CFD brokers, so your trading relationship sits offshore even though the local entity is FSCA-authorised. We could not confirm that HF Markets SA holds an ODP (over-the-counter derivative provider) authorisation.

On funding, HFM’s published account specifications list USD and EUR base currencies, while several SA review sites report ZAR accounts and local bank transfers. Confirm the currency and payment options in your myHF area before you deposit, so you know whether conversion fees apply.

How we rated HFM

TradeFX evaluates brokers using an independent, criteria-based methodology designed to reflect what matters most to real traders. Our TradeFX score is calculated across multiple factors, including broker regulation and trust signals, total trading costs (spreads, commissions, swaps and non-trading fees), platform and tool quality, product offering, deposit/withdrawal experience, customer support responsiveness, and the overall trading experience across web and mobile.

We review and update our broker data regularly to keep our comparisons current and consistent. While we aim to provide objective, data-driven insights, trading and investing involve risk — so we always recommend that you do your own independent due diligence and verify key details directly with the broker and relevant official regulatory sources before making any financial decisions.

A quick look at HFM

HFM is the 2022 rebrand of HotForex, a broker founded in 2010 that HFM says now holds over 4 million client accounts and over 100 industry awards. South Africans will recognise it from the HotForex years, and the local entity, HF Markets SA (PTY) Ltd, has been FSCA-authorised as FSP 46632 since before the rebrand.

The account lineup is built around cost choices. Cent, Premium and Zero have no minimum deposit, Pro starts at $100, and InfinityX starts at $500. Zero is the raw-pricing option with EUR/USD from 0.0 pips plus $3 per lot per side, while Pro gives you EUR/USD from 0.6 pips with no commission.

Markets cover forex, metals, energies, commodities, indices, shares, ETFs, bonds and more than 60 crypto pairs, all as CFDs, with HFM quoting over 500 instruments. You trade on MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, HFM WebTrader or the HFM App, with Autochartist, Premium Trader Tools and a free VPS option for automated strategies.

The trade-off is structure and leverage. Your client agreement is with HF Markets (SV) Ltd offshore, not with the FSCA-authorised Cape Town entity, and leverage runs to 1:2000. HFM suits traders who want low entry costs and tight raw spreads and who are comfortable managing that risk themselves.

Standout features for South African traders

  • FSCA-authorised SA entity (FSP 46632) based in Cape Town

  • Zero account: EUR/USD from 0.0 pips plus $3 per side

  • No minimum deposit on Cent, Zero and Premium accounts

  • Over 500 CFD markets on MT4, MT5 and HFM App

HFM’s products are leveraged CFDs that carry a high degree of risk to your capital and may not be suitable for all investors. HFM offers leverage of up to 1:2000, and higher on InfinityX, which can magnify losses as quickly as gains. The client agreement published on HFM’s South African site is with HF Markets (SV) Ltd, an offshore company that acts as principal to your trades. HFM does not publish a percentage of retail CFD accounts that lose money for its South African clients. Make sure you understand the risks before trading.

How to open an account with HFM — Step by Step

Step 1: Start registration

Go to HFM’s South African site and click Register. Select South Africa as your country of residence and enter your email address and a password to create your myHF client area login.

Step 2: Verify your email and complete your profile

Confirm your email, then fill in your personal details, address and phone number in myHF. Use your name exactly as it appears on your ID to avoid verification delays.

Step 3: Answer the trading experience questions

HFM asks about your employment, finances and trading experience. Answer accurately: the answers feed into the appropriateness check for leveraged CFDs.

Step 4: Upload your verification documents

HFM’s verification requirements are:

  • Proof of identity: a current, colour scan of your passport or ID (PDF or JPG)
  • Proof of address: a bank statement or utility bill not older than six months, in the same name as your ID

Step 5: Check the legal entity

Before you accept the client agreement, note which HFM entity it names. On HFM’s South African documents page, the agreement is issued by HF Markets (SV) Ltd. Keep a copy for your records.

Step 6: Open a live trading account

In myHF, choose Open Live Account and select:

  • Your platform: MT4, MT5 or HFM’s own platform
  • Your account type: Cent, Zero, Pro, Premium or InfinityX
  • Your base currency from the options offered
  • Your leverage: start far below the 1:2000 maximum

Step 7: Fund your account

Pick a deposit method in myHF. HFM lists minimums of $5 by card and $100 by bank wire. If you deposit rand into a USD account, check the conversion rate shown before you confirm.

Step 8: Log in and test

Download MT4, MT5 or the HFM App, log in with the credentials from myHF and place a small trade to confirm your spreads, commission and margin before trading at full size.

Broker Trust and Regulation

HFM operates through a group of entities. For South Africans, HF Markets SA (PTY) Ltd (reg. 2015/341406/07) is authorised by the FSCA as a financial services provider under FSP 46632, with its office in the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. However, the client agreement, order execution policy, risk disclosures and bonus terms published on HFM’s South African site are all issued by HF Markets (SV) Ltd, incorporated in St Vincent and the Grenadines, which states that it acts as principal and is the execution venue for client orders. St Vincent registration is a company registration, not a financial services licence.

We found no confirmation that HF Markets SA holds an FSCA ODP authorisation, so treat the local entity as an authorised FSP rather than the counterparty to your trades unless your own agreement says otherwise. The table lists the HFM entities named on HFM’s regulatory page as at October 2026.

Regulator Entity (Legal Name) Licence / Ref Region Notes
FSCA HF Markets SA (PTY) Ltd FSP 46632 South Africa FSCA-authorised FSP. ODP authorisation not confirmed.
None (company registration) HF Markets (SV) Ltd Reg. 22747 IBC 2015 St Vincent and the Grenadines Issuer of the client agreement on HFM’s SA site; acts as principal.
FCA HF Markets (UK) Ltd FRN 801701 United Kingdom UK-regulated group entity.
CySEC HF Markets (Europe) Ltd 183/12 Cyprus (EU) EU-regulated group entity.
FSA HF Markets (Seychelles) Ltd SD015 Seychelles Offshore securities dealer licence.
CMA HFM Investments Ltd 155 Kenya Non-dealing online forex broker licence.

HFM’s client agreement includes negative balance protection, which limits your losses on CFD trades to the funds in your trading accounts. HFM reserves the right not to apply it where a negative balance results from abusive trading, arbitrage or manifest errors.

Platforms and Tools

HFM gives you four ways to trade: MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, HFM WebTrader and the HFM App. All live accounts work across them, so you can chart on desktop and manage positions on your phone.

MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5

Both run on desktop, web and mobile. MT5 offers 21 timeframes and 6 pending order types against MT4’s 9 timeframes and 4 order types, per HFM’s platform comparison. If you are starting fresh, MT5 is the better long-term pick.

HFM WebTrader and HFM App

HFM WebTrader runs in the browser with 100+ technical indicators and 17 chart types, more than either MetaTrader build. The HFM App covers trading, deposits, withdrawals and account admin on iOS and Android.

Tools and research

  • Premium Trader Tools: an all-in-one add-on pack for MT4 and MT5
  • Autochartist: pattern recognition and market scanning
  • Economic calendar, daily analysis, trading calculators and the Trader’s Board sentiment page
  • Education: online courses, webinars, videos and podcasts

Automated and copy trading

Expert Advisors run on the MT4 and MT5 desktop platforms, and HFM offers VPS hosting for strategies that need to run around the clock. HFM also runs copy trading, with follower and strategy-provider roles, and a PAMM service for managed accounts.

Support channels

  • Live chat on the HFM website and in myHF
  • Email: support@hfm.com
  • Phone: +44 20 3097 8571 (global support)

What this means in practice

Newer traders get structured courses and webinars, and the demo contest is a low-pressure way to practise. Experienced traders will use the analysis, VPS and Premium Trader Tools more than the help desk. Note that there is no SA-specific phone number on HFM’s contact page.

Deposits and Withdrawals

All funding runs through the myHF client area. HFM publishes its methods in USD, and South African review sites report local bank transfer options for SA clients, so check what myHF shows for your account.

Deposits

Method Minimum Processing time HFM fee
Bank transfer $100 2 to 7 business days None on deposits over $100
Visa / Mastercard $5 Up to 10 minutes None
Alternative payment methods $10 to $30 Instant to 10 minutes None

Withdrawals

HFM processes withdrawal requests submitted before 10:00 server time on the same business day; later requests are processed the next business day. Funds return to the method you deposited with. HFM quotes 2 to 10 business days for bank transfers and cards to arrive, and up to 24 hours or instant for alternative methods. HFM states that it charges no withdrawal fees.

Bonus funds

Top-up Bonus credit cannot be withdrawn under any circumstances. Profits made with it can be withdrawn without restriction, under HF Markets (SV) Ltd’s bonus terms.

Practical tips (SA-friendly)

  • Complete verification before your first deposit so withdrawals are not held up.
  • Fund only from accounts and cards in your own name.
  • If your account is in USD, compare HFM’s conversion rate against your bank’s before depositing rand.
  • Submit withdrawals before 10:00 server time for same-day processing.

Account Types

HFM’s South African site lists five live accounts. Most South Africans will compare Pro (commission-free, EUR/USD from 0.6 pips) against Zero (EUR/USD from 0.0 pips plus commission). Premium and Cent suit newer traders. All accounts trade from 0.01 lots and have swap-free versions, subject to terms.

Demo account

HFM offers demo accounts on MT4, MT5 and its own platform with virtual funds and live pricing, and runs a monthly demo contest with prizes. You can change leverage on a demo account as often as you like, which is a useful way to see how margin behaves before going live.

HFM account options (overview)

Account type Minimum deposit EUR/USD from Max leverage Stop out
Cent $0 1.4 pips 1:2000 20%
Premium $0 1.4 pips 1:2000 20%
Zero $0 0.0 pips + $3/side 1:2000 20%
Pro $100 0.6 pips 1:2000 20%
InfinityX $500 0.5 pips Unlimited 0%

The Cent account trades in US cents (USC) and covers forex and gold only, which makes it useful for testing strategies with small amounts. InfinityX pairs unlimited leverage with a 0% stop out, so a position can run until your equity is exhausted: treat it as a specialist account, not a starting point. HFM also offers copy trading and PAMM for traders who want to follow or allocate to other strategies.

From a South African Perspective

HFM, formerly HotForex, has one of the longest local track records among the brokers we cover. HF Markets SA (PTY) Ltd holds FSCA authorisation as FSP 46632 and has an office at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, and HFM publishes a USD/ZAR spread on every account type.

Before you deposit, check who you contract with. HFM’s South African legal documents name HF Markets (SV) Ltd, a St Vincent and the Grenadines company, as your trading counterparty, so the trading relationship sits offshore even though the local entity is FSCA-authorised.

For SA traders who value a local presence and want a broad choice of accounts and platforms, HFM is a solid option. Confirm your account currency and payment methods in your myHF area so you know whether conversion fees apply.

What leverage does HFM offer South African traders?

How do I deposit and withdraw with HFM from South Africa?
HFM lists bank transfer, Visa and Mastercard, and alternative payment methods. HFM states that it charges no withdrawal fees, although banks and payment processors may charge their own. How long do HFM withdrawals take?
HFM processes withdrawal requests submitted before 10:00 server time on the same business day. Arrival then depends on the method: HFM quotes 2 to 10 business days for bank transfers and cards, and up to 24 hours or instant for its alternative payment methods.
Does HFM offer a bonus in South Africa?
HFM’s South African legal documents include Top-up Bonus terms with bonus percentages from 10% to 100%. The bonus itself cannot be withdrawn; profits made from it can. The exact percentage and cap are set in the client area, and terms and conditions apply.
Does HFM offer demo and Islamic accounts?
Yes. HFM offers demo accounts on its platforms and runs a monthly demo contest. Swap-free (Islamic) versions of its accounts are available, subject to HFM’s terms.
