TFX Overall Score

The TradeFX score is calculated using our independent methodology, based on multiple broker criteria including regulation, fees, platform features, and trader experience.

We review and update our data regularly to keep comparisons current.

Octa scores on cost and simplicity: $25 to start, no commission, no swap charges on any account and leverage up to 1:1000. MT5 users get 263 instruments, and published minimum spreads start at 0.7 pips on EUR/USD as at October 2026. Withdrawals are usually processed within 1 to 3 hours and Octa says it charges no deposit or withdrawal fees.

It loses points on regulation for South Africans. The FSCA authorisation sits with an intermediary, Orinoco Capital (FSP 51913), not with the company that issues your CFDs, and we could not find an ODP licence. There is no ZAR account currency, and the 50% bonus comes with a trading-volume condition before the bonus can be withdrawn.

SA Focused

Octa is set up for South Africans who want low costs and a small starting balance. The minimum deposit is $25 (Octa lists R480 for South African local deposits), local bank transfers and Ozow appear in Octa’s deposit guide, and the minimum South African withdrawal is R90.

The main point to understand is who you contract with. Orinoco Capital (Pty) Ltd holds the FSCA licence (FSP 51913) as a local intermediary. The CFDs themselves are reported to come from Octa Markets Ltd, an offshore company licensed in Mwali (Comoros). That means FSCA oversight applies to the intermediary services, while your trading relationship runs under offshore rules. Read the entity named in your client agreement before depositing.

Two practical points for day-to-day trading. First, the account currency is USD, so every rand deposit and withdrawal involves a conversion at the payment provider’s or bank’s rate. Second, every Octa account is swap-free, which helps if you hold positions for days, but the spread includes Octa’s markup instead of a separate commission, so compare the live spread on your instrument before you size up.

How we rated Octa

TradeFX evaluates brokers using an independent, criteria-based methodology designed to reflect what matters most to real traders. Our TradeFX score is calculated across multiple factors, including broker regulation and trust signals, total trading costs (spreads, commissions, swaps and non-trading fees), platform and tool quality, product offering, deposit/withdrawal experience, customer support responsiveness, and the overall trading experience across web and mobile.

We review and update our broker data regularly to keep our comparisons current and consistent. While we aim to provide objective, data-driven insights, trading and investing involve risk — so we always recommend that you do your own independent due diligence and verify key details directly with the broker and relevant official regulatory sources before making any financial decisions.

A quick look at Octa

Octa is the current name for OctaFX, a broker that has been taking clients since 2011 and says more than 40 million trading accounts have been opened with it. If you traded with OctaFX a few years ago, the main things have stayed the same: a $25 minimum deposit, no trading commission, swap-free accounts as standard and a 50% deposit bonus that sits at the centre of its marketing.

The account setup is simple. Instead of Standard, Raw or Pro tiers, Octa offers one set of trading conditions on three platforms: its own OctaTrader, MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5. MT5 carries the most markets, with 263 instruments including 148 stock CFDs and 7 ETFs. MT4 has 77 and OctaTrader 104. Leverage goes up to 1:1000 on forex and gold.

For South Africans, the key detail is structure. Octa works locally through Orinoco Capital (Pty) Ltd, an FSCA-authorised intermediary (FSP 51913), while your trading account sits with an offshore Octa company. Accounts are USD only, so ZAR deposits are converted when they land. The minimum local deposit Octa lists for South Africa is R480.

Octa suits a cost-conscious trader who wants zero commission, no overnight swaps and a low entry point. It suits you less if you want an FSCA-licensed product issuer, a ZAR base currency or a broker that publishes detailed account-level spread tables.

Standout features for South African traders

  • Zero commission and swap-free on every account

  • $25 minimum deposit

  • 50% bonus on each deposit

  • FSCA-authorised SA intermediary (FSP 51913)

Trading CFDs with Octa involves significant risk and may result in the loss of your invested capital. Leverage of up to 1:1000 magnifies losses as well as gains, and prices can move against you quickly. For South African clients, Octa's FSCA-authorised entity, Orinoco Capital (Pty) Ltd (FSP 51913), acts as an intermediary only: your trades are with an offshore Octa company. Deposit bonuses carry trading-volume conditions. Only trade with money you can afford to lose, and make sure you understand the risks before trading.

How to open an account with Octa — Step by Step

Step 1: Start the sign-up

Go to Octa’s site and choose Open account. Fill in the sign-up form with your email address, or link a social media profile if you prefer.

Step 2: Confirm your email

Octa sends an email titled Confirm Your Email Address. Open it and confirm to activate your Octa profile.

Step 3: Choose your platform and leverage

  • Pick your platform: OctaTrader, MT4 or MT5 (MT5 has the most instruments).
  • Your account currency will be USD, the only option Octa offers.
  • Select your leverage. Up to 1:1000 is available on forex, but a lower setting limits how fast losses can build.

Step 4: Save your trading credentials

After the account opens, Octa emails your trading account login details. Save them: you need them to log in to MT4, MT5 or OctaTrader.

Step 5: Verify your identity (KYC)

Upload your documents in your Octa profile. Verification is required before you can withdraw.

  • Proof of identity: SA ID card or book, or passport
  • Proof of address: a recent bank statement or utility bill

Step 6: Make your first deposit

Log in to your profile, select your account at the top of the page and click New Deposit. Choose a payment method in your own name. The listed South African minimum is R480 by local deposit. If you want the 50% bonus, apply it manually or tick the option to apply bonuses automatically, and read the volume condition first.

Step 7: Log in and place a small test trade

Download your platform or use OctaTrader in the browser, log in with your credentials and place a small trade. Check the spread, margin and lot size before you trade larger.

Broker Trust and Regulation

Octa is the current name of the broker formerly known as OctaFX, which has offered online trading since 2011. Octa runs a brand-sharing structure: several separate companies use the Octa name, and each is responsible for its own licensing and compliance. Octa states that clients are onboarded and serviced only by the entity named in their account-opening documents, so the entity in your client agreement is the one that matters.

For South Africans, the local entity is Orinoco Capital (Pty) Ltd (company registration 2021/704761/07), an FSCA-authorised financial services provider (FSP 51913) that acts as a local intermediary under FAIS. Orinoco Capital does not issue the CFDs or take the other side of your trades. South African review sites report that trades are executed by Octa Markets Ltd, an offshore company licensed by the Mwali International Services Authority (MISA) in the Comoros (licence T2023320). As at October 2026 we could not find Octa or Orinoco Capital on the FSCA’s list of licensed over-the-counter derivative providers (ODPs). Check the counterparty named in your client agreement before you fund.

Regulator Entity (Legal Name) Licence / Ref Region Notes
FSCA Orinoco Capital (Pty) Ltd FSP 51913 South Africa Local FAIS intermediary for SA clients. Not the counterparty or product issuer.
MISA Octa Markets Ltd T2023320 Mwali (Comoros) Offshore entity reported as the trading counterparty for SA and most international clients.
CySEC Octa Markets Cyprus Ltd 372/18 Cyprus (EU) EU-regulated Octa entity. Does not onboard SA clients.
FSC Mauritius Uni Fin Invest GB21027161 Mauritius Investment Dealer licence.

A separate company, Octa Markets Incorporated, holds a business registration in Saint Lucia (2023-00092). That is a company registration, not a financial services licence.

Client protections Octa publishes

  • Negative balance protection: Octa states it applies to all clients. If a stop out leaves your balance negative, Octa resets it to zero.
  • Segregated accounts: Octa says client funds are held in segregated accounts, separate from company funds.
  • No guaranteed stops: Octa does not guarantee stop orders. Once triggered, a stop becomes a market order and can fill at a worse price in a gap.

Platforms and Tools

Octa gives you three platforms, all with the same pricing: no commission, swap-free trading and spreads from 0.6 pips. The difference is the instrument list and order sizes.

Platform Instruments Max order size Best for
OctaTrader 104 50 lots Traders who want Octa’s own web and app experience
MetaTrader 5 263 (incl. 148 stocks, 7 ETFs) 500 lots The widest market list and MT5 tools
MetaTrader 4 77 200 lots Traders with existing MT4 indicators and EAs

OctaTrader

OctaTrader is Octa’s in-house platform, available in the browser and in the Octa app. It is the simplest way to trade with Octa if you do not need MetaTrader add-ons, though it carries fewer instruments than MT5 and caps orders at 50 lots.

MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5

Both MetaTrader platforms are supported, with 5-digit pricing and market execution. MT5 is the stronger pick for a new account because it holds all 148 stock CFDs and 7 ETFs that the other platforms do not carry.

Copy trading, automation and extras

  • Octa Copy: follow master traders or share your own strategy.
  • Expert Advisors: supported on all platforms, along with hedging and scalping.
  • Autochartist: pattern-recognition tool listed in Octa’s help centre.
  • Status program and rewards catalogue: earn XP from trading activity for rewards.

Octa charges no trading commission on any account. Its costs are built into the spread as a markup. All accounts are swap-free, so you do not pay overnight financing on positions held past the daily rollover. Octa says it charges no deposit or withdrawal fees and covers fees charged by third parties such as Skrill and Neteller. The one account fee to watch is a $5 inactivity fee listed on Octa’s account comparison page.

Spreads are variable. Octa’s marketing headline is spreads from 0.6 pips, and its instrument pages publish a minimum and average spread for each symbol. Pricing is the same on OctaTrader, MT4 and MT5, so the table uses the MT5 minimum spreads. Units are as Octa publishes them.

Tradable Instruments

Octa’s market list depends on the platform. MT5 has the full range at 263 instruments, OctaTrader has 104 and MT4 has 77. If you want stock CFDs or ETFs, MT5 is the only platform that carries them.

Index symbols include US30, NAS100, SPX500, GER40, UK100, JPN225 and AUS200. USD/ZAR is available for traders who want rand exposure.

Trader Support

Octa runs support around the clock and markets a 30-second response time on its contact page. That suits South African traders who want help outside office hours, for example with a deposit on a weekend.

Support channels

  • Live chat: 24/7, for account and platform questions
  • Email support: for document and verification follow-ups
  • Help centre: FAQ sections on account opening, verification, deposits, bonuses, platforms and copy trading

  • Webinars
  • Trading articles and beginner tutorials
  • Platform manuals for MT4, MT5 and OctaTrader
  • Autochartist market analysis

What this means in practice

The help centre answers most admin questions without a wait, and the education content covers the basics for new traders. There is no physical Octa office open to South African clients that we could confirm, so support runs online.

Deposits and Withdrawals

Octa keeps funding low cost: it says it charges no deposit or withdrawal fees and covers third-party payment fees. The catch for South Africans is currency. Accounts are held in USD only, so rand payments are converted by the payment provider or bank.

Deposits

Deposits are made in your Octa profile under New Deposit. Octa’s deposit guide lists local bank transfers, cards and e-wallets (Ozow, Skrill and Neteller) and a R480 minimum for South African deposits. Bank transfer deposits are processed within 1 to 3 hours during the finance department’s working hours, and some methods credit instantly.

Withdrawals

Withdrawals go back to the method you deposited with, in your own name. Octa says it usually processes requests within 1 to 3 hours, after which your bank or payment provider may take 1 to 3 business days to complete the transfer. The South African minimum withdrawal is R90. Your profile must be verified before you can withdraw.

Segregation of funds

Octa states that client money is held in segregated accounts, separate from the company’s own funds. Remember that your funds sit with an offshore Octa entity, not with the FSCA-authorised intermediary.

Practical tips (SA-friendly)

  • Complete verification (ID and proof of address) before your first withdrawal request.
  • Use one payment method in your own name; third-party payments are rejected.
  • Check the conversion rate on rand deposits and withdrawals, since the account is in USD.
  • If you take the deposit bonus, check the remaining lot requirement before requesting a withdrawal.

Account Types

Octa does not split clients into Standard, Raw or Pro tiers. Every live account has the same conditions: $25 minimum deposit, spreads from 0.6 pips, no commission, swap-free trading and USD as the account currency. Your choice is the platform.

Demo account (how it works, how to open it, and how long it lasts)

Octa offers demo accounts on OctaTrader, MT4 and MT5 with virtual funds, so you can practise order types and position sizing before funding.

How to open an Octa demo account

  1. Sign up on Octa’s site and confirm your email.
  2. In your profile, open a demo account and choose OctaTrader, MT4 or MT5.
  3. Log in with the demo credentials Octa provides.

Does the demo expire?

Yes, if you stop using it. Octa deactivates inactive demo accounts after 8 days on MT4 and 30 days on MT5 without a login.

Octa account options (overview)

OctaTrader account New traders who want one simple app 104 instruments, orders up to 50 lots, $25 minimum deposit.

From a South African Perspective

Octa, formerly OctaFX, is set up for South Africans who want low costs and a small starting balance. The minimum deposit is USD 25 (R480 for local deposits), local bank transfers and Ozow are supported, and the minimum withdrawal is R90.

Orinoco Capital (Pty) Ltd holds the FSCA licence (FSP 51913) as Octa’s local intermediary, while the CFDs are reported to come from an offshore Octa entity. Read the entity named in your client agreement before depositing.

Every Octa account is swap-free, which helps if you hold trades for days, but costs sit in the spread rather than a separate commission. Accounts are in USD, so allow for conversion on rand deposits and withdrawals.
